Wikimedia announces the Wikidata project

Wikidata is the latest project from the stables of Wikimedia Foundation.

Wikidata is designed to create a database of information that can be queried to generate results.

It could be used by both humans and machines to get structured results based on queries.

It would power data retrieval for all the language editions of the Wikipedia project in the future.

Wikimedia got funds to run this project from Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Google.

The foundation said:

Wikidata aims to create a free knowledge base about the world that can be read and edited by humans and machines alike. It will provide data in all the languages of the Wikimedia projects, and allow for the central access to data in a similar vein as Wikimedia Commons does for multimedia files. Wikidata is proposed as a new Wikimedia hosted and maintained project.
