Canonical is the company behind the popular Ubuntu Linux Distribution.
They have now showcased their Ubuntu TV platform. It is a platform optimized for television screens designed to let stream and watch video content.
It would feature an interface similar to Unity which is the default UI of Ubuntu today.
Ubuntu TV would feature apps for download and streaming movies and television shows from the internet. YouTube is also deeply integrated.
The company is providing this platform for free to any manufacturer interested in including it on their products.
Canonical is hoping that television sets powered by this platform would be on sale in the market by the end of the year.
Ubuntu TV faces intense competition from various alternatives like Google TV, Apple TV and of course manufacturer specific solution.
