Zee Dish truHD+ DTH comes with support for external storage media

Zee Dish TV has launched a brand new HD STB model named Dish truHD+.

The company is offering something interesting in this edition. There is no internal storage for recording media.

Instead, they are allowing the user to connect their own pen drives and external hard disks.

This means that the users get the option to add as much storage as they want to their DTH set top boxes.

The concept is good but there are a couple of issues. The biggest hassle of course is the increased prices of hard disks in the market today because of the floods in the South East Asia.

Also, it is not clear how good the overall performance be if the user connects a low performance storage media to the set top box!

The good thing is that the lack of a hard disk enables Zee to price this box competitively at just around Rs. 2700.

The company said: “Shah Rukh has helped our brand grow. Our advertisements with him have got great response from consumers. We are very happy with the results of the association and have decided to renew the contract.”

He features in most of their print, television and online ads.

Zee Dish TV is set to offer their television services on two luxury train services in the Indian market.

Palace on Wheels and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels would both offer live television using Dish TV supplied technology.

Zee Dish TV is incidentally already providing a similar service to Kingfisher Airlines.

The company said that they are now in talks with the Indian Railways to bring television programming to Shatabdi and Rajdhani Express.

Zee spoke about the technology powering the service: “Seamless entertainment in a train is a critical issue as the train crosses various terrains. However, through the technology we devised, the 54-inch long antennae will always remain connected with the satellite.”

The Indian DTH market has seen intense competition from new entrants, particularly Sun DTH and Big TV. Amidst all this, the market leader Dish TV, has managed to maintain its lead over its competition, using a host of cost effective packages, a strategy that has augured well in the price sensitive Indian market.

Now they are coming up with another ad featuring their brand ambassador, superstar Shah Rukh Khan, in an entirely new look. SRK is shown as an old man, romancing Tanvi Azmi. While SRK has played an old man in films like Veer Zaara earlier, the look here is different from anything that has been seen before.

The ad has been conceptualised by Prasoon Joshi of Taare Zameen Par fame, and directed by Anurag Basu.

We await the release of this ad.

Tata Sky DTH service has 4 million subscribers now

Tata Sky has announced that they are now serving more than 40 lakh DTH customers in the Indian market.

Tata Sky is one of the many DTH service providers in the Indian market. Zee Dish TV was the first and remains the market leader with around 5.5 million customers.

Tata Sky said at the occasion: “We have achieved significant success in reaching four million connections in such a short time, and in a highly competitive market.”

Tata Sky is a joint venture between Tata Group and Star.

The company added: “The end-to-end digital solutions suite from NDS, coupled with our unparalleled customer service and innovative product offerings, have enabled us to provide differentiated applications and a superior viewing experience for our subscribers.”

Things to know before getting a DTH connection!

Things to know before getting a DTH connection!

If you are sick and tired of your cable guy, you might be considering getting a DTH connection.

You have lots of choices today. Zee Dish TV, Tata Sky, Reliance Big TV, Sun Direct, Airtel Digital TV

The fact remains that it could be a bad investment.

Some things to consider before you go and buy yourself a DTH connection!

DTH connection would prove to be more expensive in short and long term.

You pay a big amount initially for the connection which includes charges for the STB Box, Dish and sometimes a subscription for 6-12 months.

All the DTH providers in India are offering locked STB boxes. That means you cannot use a Dish TV STB box with a Reliance Big TV connection card.

There is no return policy offered. You are stuck with the box and the dish if you decide not to continue with that service in the future.

A DTH connection would only work on one TV. If you want to connect multiple TVs, you need separate account for each.

Most of the service providers in India offer a child connection which has a discounted price for a second (third or fourth) television set.

It is often a hassle to make the things work. Especially if you want one package on one TV and another package on the second.

There is also this major hassle of channels. You are unlikely to find a package which has all the channels you want and it is a value for money deal.

Most of the times you are required to pay for multiple channels to get access to one channel which you need.

Some of the companies do not even have options to get all the channels available in the market.

Another problem occurs when a channel decides to raise its price. The DTH provider then removes the channel from the package and you are required to pay an additional fee for that.

So, in some cases you might not end up getting all the channels in the package you get initially by the time the package validity ends.

There are lots of other factors which makes DTH a much more complicated decision compared to the old provider Cable Guy. He made things a lot easier for us by dealing with media companies. In the end, you tend to get a better value for money deal from him rather than a DTH provider.

The only problem is that in most cases the Cable Guy is this evil maniac who drives you crazy even when it is pretty clear that you would end up discarding him to get a DTH connection.

We can only hope that the Cable TV industry wakes up to the mess and realize that they have much to lose by providing a lousy service to the end customer.

We can also just hope that TRAI wakes up and make the DTH companies offer a better value and product to the customer.

We should have access to an open STB which can work with any connection. We should have the power to choose the channels we want to see and pay for individually.

And we should have the end satisfaction knowing that we are indeed the king in this market. Which we are not at this point of time. Definitely.
