200,000 hours of free internet for Opera Mini users on Idea network

Idea Cellular is giving away 200,000 hours of free internet access, over the next 20 days, to its users through the web pass service on Opera Mini. For users who have never experienced the internet from their mobiles before, this is the easiest way to shed inhibitions and get online.

Idea Web Pass is a unique Opera solution that allows consumers to buy customized data packs within the Opera Mini browser itself. It’s great for those people who have short-term data requirements and don’t wish to pay for a full time internet plan. In India, web passes are currently available only on the Idea network, starting at just Re 1 for hourly internet access/ daily Facebook access and go up to Re 30 for a week’s internet access. With a Sponsored Web Pass, users pay only one paise for acquiring the web pass, and the rest is taken care of by the sponsor, in this case Idea.

To enjoy free internet, Opera Mini users simply have to go to the Speed Dial page in Opera Mini and click on ‘Idea Web Pass’. From here, they can select ‘Free Internet Trial Pass (3 MB)’ from the list of web passes. Users can avail one web pass each during this campaign, which entitles them to one hour of free internet, upto 3 MB, during that day.

The 200,000 hours of free internet are available for the next 20 days. On each day, the Free Internet Trial Pass can be availed by 10,000 users on a first-come, first-served basis.

Idea subscribers who don’t already have Opera Mini on their phones can visit m.opera.com and download Opera Mini absolutely free. Opera Mini works on almost all kinds of phones, from basic Java phones to the latest Android and iOS smartphones. Opera Mini’s unique compression technology shrinks a webpage to almost as little as 10% of it’s original size. So when it comes to viewing webpages, Opera Mini users can browse a lot more of them within a set data limit as compared to other mobile browsers.

Idea becomes the first network in South Asia to launch Sponsored Opera Web Pass in association with Quikr

Quikr teams up with Idea and Opera as the first advertiser to lower the barriers for Indians to come online

Idea Cellular, India’s 3rd-largest mobile operator and Opera Software have joined hands with Quikr, India’s largest online mobile classifieds portal to offer sponsored mobile data through Sponsored Web Passes for over 137 million Idea customers in India. The tri-partnership is aimed at enabling more Indians to get online and experience the power of the internet on their mobile phones, the first such initiative in South Asia.

A web pass is a great alternative to monthly data plans for consumers who do not require full-time internet access. Opera partnered with Idea earlier this year to bring this innovative solution to Opera Mini users in India. This solution provides affordable internet packages, tailor-made to enable Idea subscribers to enjoy internet access for particular timelines or websites, such as Facebook access for a day or internet access for an hour at just Re. 1. Web passes allow transparent, self-explanatory transactions, along with affordable and controllable pay-as-you-go features.

With Sponsored Web Pass, Idea subscribers will enjoy internet on their mobile phones, sponsored by Quikr. To get sponsored web access, Idea users just need to open Opera Mini and click the “Idea Web Pass” Speed Dial entry, then select the “Free Internet by Quikr (10 MB)” web pass option. From there, users will be able to enjoy 10 MB of sponsored internet access on their mobile phones for an entire day.

Speaking about the association, Sashi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer, Idea Cellular, says, “Data is going to be the next big game changer in the Indian telecom industry. However, there are certain entry-level barriers that must be overcome for mass adoption. The web pass concept has helped us surpass the barrier of cost and convenience and has led to a spike in the number of data users on our network. Now, with Sponsored Web Pass, we are confident that even more non-data users will come on board and enjoy the amazing world of internet on their mobile phones, while also giving an opportunity to advertisers to gain instant connect with consumers using the mobile platform.”

Sunil Kamath, Vice President for South Asia at Opera Software, says, “At Opera, we are always looking for new ways to break the barriers for internet access and ensure that more and more people get connected to the web. In line with that, we are extremely happy to deploy our first-ever Sponsored Web Pass in South Asia, with Idea and Quikr.

Kamath adds, “This revolutionary tool helps operators expand the reach of mobile internet to many more new users, who might otherwise be wary of spending on data plans. It’s a great avenue for advertisers as well, who gain an extremely positive brand association with millions of consumers through Opera Mini. Consumers love sponsored internet access, which is increasingly becoming a necessity today. Sponsored Web Pass is a win-win for everyone.”

Pranay Chulet, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Quikr.com says, “We are very excited to partner with Opera and Idea for this groundbreaking solution. Today, Indian consumers are increasingly using their mobile phones to reach out to all kinds of products and services. Given Opera Mini’s massive popularity in India, this is a great opportunity for us to connect with new consumers and create mindshare through this new platform of advertising, which directly benefits consumers, as well.”

Opera and Idea launch affordable web pass packages

No data plan? No problem

Idea Cellular, India’s third-largest mobile operator, and Opera Software today announced the launch of Idea Web Pass, which can be purchased from within the Opera Mini browser. This web pass will allow users to enjoy customized mobile internet packages when using the Opera Mini web browser. Subscribers just need to start the Opera Mini web browser on their mobile phones, click “Idea Web Pass” on the Speed Dial page and choose from a list of web pass subscriptions. This allows Idea mobile customers to choose from a range of internet packages to suit their personal internet-access needs.

Idea Web Pass packages include the following:

Daily Internet Pass for Rs 8
Weekly Facebook Pass for Rs 7
Weekly Internet Pass for Rs 30

Idea Web Pass is an easy and convenient way to purchase an internet-access package. The web pass options are available on a prepaid basis, as well as on a postpaid one for mobile users on the Idea network.

“At Opera, we work towards connecting the world, and we believe that the web is for everyone. We trust that this partnership with Idea Cellular will help us to reach out to first-time users who have not been exposed to the web,” says Sunil Kamath, Vice President for South Asia, Opera Software. “We have observed an increase in the usage of mobile internet in this country, which will only continue to grow, inline with the expansion of 3G usage in more cities. Idea Web Pass will entice more users to get online and serve as a catalyst to boost mobile internet usage.”

“Idea has consistently focused on growing data penetration across the country; we understand that a lot of Idea users choose to access a few preferred sites rather than buying full data plans. Our partnership with Opera for the web pass will help us to reach out to those users and provide them with a convenient data-plan option. We believe that more and more internet users accessing web via mobile phones will usher in a new wave of mobile-data growth in the country,” says Sashi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer, Idea Cellular.

All Idea users can subscribe to these offers for their daily internet dose. They can download Opera Mini from any of the popular app stores or by visiting m.opera.com from their mobile devices. Once Opera Mini is installed, they just need to click the “Idea Web Pass” Speed Dial entry to select the data package that’s right for them.

Bharti Airtel, Idea and Vodafone forbidden from adding new 3G customers in roaming circles

Bharti Airtel, Idea and Vodafone forbidden from adding new 3G customers in roaming circles

Supreme Court has ruled that Airtel, Vodafone and Idea cannot accept new 3G subscribers in circles where they are offering services through roaming agreements.

Indian government claims that these agreements are illegal as these companies are not allowed to offer 3G services outside the circles where they have acquired the rights for.

These companies have signed on deals with each other to offer 3G services to their customers on roaming.

Supreme Court would give its judgment next month. Until then, these companies can continue to offer 3G services to existing subscribers.

Airtel has been offering 3G services in seven different circles through these agreements.

Idea Cellular to offer a customized version of Opera Mini to their customers

The collaboration would see Idea offering Opera Mini as a download from their mobile portal.

Idea spoke about this deal:

In emerging markets like India, the mobile phone will soon become the primary way of accessing the Internet. We are arming ourselves with the best-in-class solutions for catering to this data-hungry population.

Opera Software added:

Operators such as Idea Cellular are driving mass awareness about mobile Internet in the country. Opera Mini is the ideal enabler for the Web on all mobile phones, bringing the full Internet to all devices, regardless of device constraints and platform. As the mobile landscape in India grows and changes, we hope to work together with Idea Cellular and continue building value.

Of course, Idea users can download the generic version of Opera Mini already from the Opera website. It is also available from all major mobile app stores.

Indian government announces 3G roaming agreements are in violation of signed deals

Indian telecom department has asked mobile operators in the country to discontinue their 3G roaming deals as they are in violation of the deals signed with the government for spectrum sale.

Government sources said: “The decision has been taken that this (3G roaming pacts) is in violation of terms and conditions of the license… will be issuing notices asking them (operators) to stop their service with immediate effect. But on penalty, no decision has been taken yet.”

Companies like airtel, Vodafone and Idea signed collaborative deals to let their customers access 3G networks of other operators in areas where they did not have the required licenses.

It remains to be seen how these private players would respond to these new developments.
