Zee Dish truHD+ DTH comes with support for external storage media

Zee Dish TV has launched a brand new HD STB model named Dish truHD+.

The company is offering something interesting in this edition. There is no internal storage for recording media.

Instead, they are allowing the user to connect their own pen drives and external hard disks.

This means that the users get the option to add as much storage as they want to their DTH set top boxes.

The concept is good but there are a couple of issues. The biggest hassle of course is the increased prices of hard disks in the market today because of the floods in the South East Asia.

Also, it is not clear how good the overall performance be if the user connects a low performance storage media to the set top box!

The good thing is that the lack of a hard disk enables Zee to price this box competitively at just around Rs. 2700.

Airtel DTH gets back radio channels but they are not as good as WorldSpace

Airtel has added a bunch of radio channels to their service platforms. Most of these are from the All India Radio. There are some private ones too. But these are no comparison to what they had originally launched with… WorldSpace.

Tata Sky DTH now offering all channels on a la carte!

Tata Sky DTH now offering all channels on a la carte!

Tata Sky DTH has launched their Make My Pack service. This is something that is highly desirable by the end user in the Indian DTH market.

Customers can now pick individual channels for their own connection. There are a couple of limitations like the channels would have to be subscribed for a minimum period of three months and you cannot make a package that costs less than Rs. 150.

But still, this is much better than paying for bundles of channels for a single channel you watch.

It is not clear whether this approach would become popular with their customers and whether rival services would also offer it in the coming times.

TRAI to enforce crucial ruling allowing DTH customers to pick their choice of channels

TRAI to enforce crucial ruling allowing DTH customers to pick their choice of channels

Good news for DTH customers in the country. TRAI is all set to enforce a new ruling that would bring joy to everyone who pays for a DTH connection every month.

DTH service providers would soon have to allow customers to pick channels of their choice. Currently, customers are forced to pick between bouquets. This means that the customer ends up paying for channels they do not care.

The only limitation is that the customer would have to pay at least Rs. 50 for the list of channels they want to pay for. This should not be a problem for anyone in our opinion.

TRAI is also going to enforce another ruling which would stop the operator from hiking the price of their offerings within the first six months of subscription for a new customer.

These new rulings come into effect from September 2010.

We can only hope now that TRAI forces the DTH operators in the country to make their devices interoperable so the the customers can switch from one service provider to another without buying a new set top box.
