The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 5.4.3

The Document Foundation (TDF) announces LibreOffice 5.4.3, the third minor release of LibreOffice 5.4 family. LibreOffice 5.4.3 continues to represent the bleeding edge in term of features, and as such is targeted at technology enthusiasts and early adopters.

TDF suggests to conservative users and enterprises to deploy LibreOffice 5.3.7 with the backing of certified professionals (an updated list is available at

Harnessing the Tourism Potential

Mumbai, November 2, 2017: A plenary session ‘Harnessing the Tourism Potential’ was organised at the CII Invest North 2017 conclave at Mumbai. Distinguished panellist from the tourism industry were invited to speak upon the ways to tap the immense potential of the tourism sector in India.

The Indian Tourism and Hospitality Industry is one of the key drivers of growth in the area of the services sector in India. Tourism has a very large potential to generate employment and approximately employs 13 million people across various sub-segments of the sector.

Tourism and Hospitality sector has attracted around US$ 9 billion of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) during the period April 2000-March 2016, according to the data released by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

Today, Tourism and Hospitality sector has emerged as one of the the fastest growing industries globally. India has a huge untapped potential in the tourism sector and if developed properly it has the potential to add tremendous towards the growth of Indian economy.

Mr. K.B. Kachru, CII Chairman – NR Committee on Tourism and Hospitality in his opening remarks mentioned that over last 6 decades Tourism is the fastest growing sector globally and provided over 40 million livelihood across the globe. He further added that tourism has the potential to provide over 1000 employment per day and tourism sector can become one of the largest job providers if developed properly.

Mr. Apurv Kumar, Managing Director, Clarks Group of Hotels, shared that Tourism is contributing 10% to the GDP and employment in the tourism sector has grown at 2% annually. He also mentioned that today we have the fastest growing Tourism economy in G20 nations.

Mr. Mandeep Lamba, Managing Director, JLL India, in his address spoke how new innovations are happening in the tourism industry and the huge potential that India has in the tourism sector. He further added that 35 to 40% return is the bottom line if investments are done suitably in the sector.

Mr. Rahul Pandit, Managing Director and CEO, Ginger Hotels, speaking on the occasion expressed that travel is the biological need of humans, and tourism destination should be treated at par with natural resources. He also said that we are the youngest major economy in the world and travel and hospitality sector has the potential to drive the Indian economy. FICCI Announces 13th Edition of Higher Education Summit 2017

Apple’s iOS 11 overtakes 10.3 in under a month

Rapid rise “has implications for digital advertisers”

Statcounter also announces major revamp of web analytics site

Apple’s latest operating system iOS 11 has overtaken its former version iOS 10.3 less than a month after release according to web analytics company Statcounter.

Statcounter Global Stats reports that iOS 11 reached 42% of all iOS versions worldwide in October compared to 35.5% for iOS 10.3. On a daily basis, iOS 11 overtook 10.3 on October 12th, less than a month after its release on September 19th.

“Even by Apple’s high standards of migrating users, the rapid take up of iOS 11 has been impressive,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, Statcounter.

He added that the rapid rise of iOS 11 has implications for digital advertisers. “iOS 11’s feature called Intelligent Tracking Prevention makes it harder for advertisers and publishers to track users online.”

Statcounter has also announced a major revamp of its core web analytics site.

“Our goal has always been to make Statcounter the most useful, engaging and easy to use analytics app for our members,” commented Cullen. “Redesigned from the ground up, we want to make it easier than ever for members to understand their visitors and make the most informed decisions about their website.”

Statcounter ( provides companies, agencies, bloggers, self-employed and charities with data to measure visitor activity on their website, blog or forum. It includes a free version.

Its research arm Statcounter Global Stats grew out of the volume of research material it was able to harness from 10 billion page views per month to more than two million websites.

LANXESS Urethane Systems will enhance research on next generation materials

The Urethane Systems business unit of specialty chemicals company LANXESS decided to join the Center for UMass/Industry Research on Polymers (CUMIRP) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA, in order to enhance its scientific research on next generation materials. CUMIRP acts as a cross-roads where university research and education meet with industrial partners in polymer materials, engineering and processing to leverage resources and foster collaboration. LANXESS will join Flammability Cluster (Cluster F) and Mechanical Properties & Additive Manufacturing Cluster (Cluster M). This collaboration targets the development of novel urethane materials, it focuses on in-depth understating of structure-property relationships to develop new process methods and new chemistries. The collaboration will come into effect on October 2017.

Polymer research at the highest level

The Polymer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the leading institute on polymer science in the USA and one of the largest academic centers for polymer research in the world, with currently more than 200 scientists, USD 24 million in instrumentation and over 600 doctoral degrees awarded.

A key figure in the academic collaboration for Urethane Systems is scientist Alan Lesser from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who is a world expert in deformation and fracture of polymers and composites. His research focuses on strength, durability, and micromechanics of polymer blends and composites, nano and molecular composites, constructive modeling of polymers in complex stress states as well as unique processing methods and multi-functional additives. As of 2016, the group is focusing on next-generation Additive Manufacturing formulations. Furthermore, Lesser is editor-in-chief for the technical media Polymer Engineering and Science Journal, Polymer Composites, and Journal of Vinyl & Additives Technology.

The previous relationship, under the roof of Chemtura, which was taken over by the LANXESS group in April 2017, comprised targeted research in flame retardants and urethanes structured foams.

Universal Robots expands Universal Robots Academy

More than 14,000 users from 132 countries have joined the Universal Robots Academy to become robot programmers. Adding to its basic training, the Academy is now launching three new modules that focus on mastering more advanced features of collaborative robots.

Universal Robots introduced the online learning platform to ensure that everybody with a desire to learn the concepts of cobots get the introduction necessary to master basic programming skills.

Universal Robots is now expanding the online training, adding three new modules that step up complexity by teaching users how to create and work with coordinate systems, variables and conditional statements, and how to use the cobot’s wizard to easily create a program for packaging.

CTO and co-founder of Universal Robots, Esben Østergaard, explain that it is unusual in the industry to make robot training curriculum of this caliber available for free: “This is a long-term investment for us. We want to raise the robot literacy and the reason for speeding up the entry of cobots is not only to optimize production here and now,” says Esben Østergaard. “We are facing a looming skills gap in the manufacturing industry that we need to bridge by all means possible. Facilitating knowledge creation and access to our cobots is an important step in that direction.”

One of the early adopters of Universal Robots Academy is the Whirlpool Corporation where the Universal Robots Academy modules now provide the basic foundation for all UR cobot training at the company’s plant in Ohio, USA. Tim Hossler, Controls Engineer at Whirlpool, emphasizes the great convenience of being able to offer this resource to employees in-house: “Now we don’t have to wait and send them out for basic training elsewhere. The modules can be completed at our own pace and we can even pick and choose which modules we offer different personnel depending on skill sets and their level of interaction with the cobots,” says Tim Hossler. “I really like the interactive approach, it makes learning very hands-on and transferable to what we would actually be doing here at our plant. I was also pleasantly surprised that the modules were free of charge for anyone to use. It definitely increases the accessibility of the UR cobots.”

Mathieu Spinnler, CEO of Spinnler Cartonnages in France, was looking for information about the UR cobots when he came across the UR Academy: “With more than 150 co-workers in our company, the idea of self-government and free training in apprenticeships of robots was appreciated by everyone,” says Mathieu Spinnler, who explains that the modules also helped him realize what areas of the robot applications installed he needed to discuss with an integrator.

At Vira Brands, a Spanish confectionary and chocolate manufacturer, the robotics modules gave the company’s area manager, Joan Teixidó, the insight to implement a UR cobot in the production line: “We decided to opt for this technology and doing the free online Universal Robots Academy course helped us take the step,” says Joan Teixidó. “The ease with which we could interact with the platform and the clarity of the information offered in the e-learning modules gave us the confidence to go ahead and install a UR cobot.”

The nine Universal Robots Academy modules are available in English, Spanish, German, French and Chinese. The basic training, that the three new modules are building upon, include adding end-effectors, connecting I/Os, creating basic programs in addition to setting up tools and safety zones. 43,000 courses have now been completed on the online training platform that just made the shortlist for the prestigious Learning Technologies Awards in the “Excellence in the design of learning content” category along with companies such as IKEA and KPMG.
