Wal-Mart, Amazon, and Apple having success with online shoppers

Online shopping has become a hot market in the United States and this year it seems to be that the winners are Wal-Mart, Amazon and Apple. Market research claims that these three vendors have been most successful in converting visitors into buyers of the products on sale on their online shopping portals.

Internet measurement firm Hitwise compiled the research data for Reuters and along with eBay these three market giants are some of the hottest online stores to shop on this holiday season. Along with shipping company Web sites at UPS, DHL, and FedEx, these were the sites receiving the heaviest traffic in the last couple of weeks.

It is hard to estimate the number of actual orders being placed on these online stores as the official figures are not yet released by these companies. However, the traffic converting from these sites to shipping sites give a good estimate on the number of orders a particular web store is receiving from the online shopping web user.

Hitwise analyst Bill Tancer said on their research data: “Looking at things like shipping are great proxies for how much people are buying.” Their research also hints that other stores like Target Corp. and Best Buy Co. are not as successful in converting the online visits to real sales.
