Mocality is an internet company operating in Kenya. A blog post from them has just given Google one of their biggest PR headaches ever.
Mocality has provided enough facts that prove that Google Kenya used data on their website improperly and even lied about their relationship with the company to the businesses operating in the country.
In simple terms, Google employees scrapped data from the local listings on the Mocality website and contacted these businesses. The worst part is that the people involved lied to business owners about their relationship with Mocality. Business owners were told that Google was working with Mocality to offer them free online presence. And Mocality was going to start charging for listing on their website in the future. Both of these statements were not true.
Google has made an official announcement. A company representative had this to say:
We were mortified to learn that a team of people working on a Google project improperly used Mocality’s data and misrepresented our relationship with Mocality to encourage customers to create new websites. We’ve already unreservedly apologized to Mocality. We’re still investigating exactly how this happened, and as soon as we have all the facts, we’ll be taking the appropriate action with the people involved.
