Microsoft confirms battery-draining problem on Intel Core Duo-equipped notebooks

A software glitch can be bad enough to cause low battery backup on certain Intel Dual Core processor powered notebooks. Microsoft has confirmed that a bug in their Windows XP SP2 USB 2.0 driver which causes this problem.

The software giant also made it clear that they are working on a fix. Interestingly, the company had already notified the hardware manufacturers about this bug around seven months back and apparently has failed to issue a fix until now.

As per a leaked document available, online the bug doesn’t let the notebook enter “sleep” state when the processor is idled to conserve battery power. This result in the notebook consuming regular power even when it is not supposed to consume extra battery power.

As per tests conducted by hardware experts, this bug alone can result in battery backup falling by as much as one hour in regular usage. A temporary patch is available online, which involves editing the operating system’s register though the patch from the company is expected to be a much better approach.
