Microsoft collaborating with Palm for Treo 700
Two old rivals in the Smartphone market are getting together as Microsoft is planning to collaborate with Palm Inc to unveil on Monday a new mobile phone that will run Microsoft’s software. The new device called Treo 700 would be offered with Verizon Wireless as the mobile service provider and it would be capable of providing Internet, news and e-mail to the user on this small screen device similar to its other siblings.
All the three companies involved in the process have declined to reveal any details about their product, as the launch is due soon. However, a press release from the companies confirms that they would hold a joint press conference on Monday. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates is expected to be present at this meeting.
Palm has been struggling in the last couple of years as the market has become more competitive than ever. With players like Microsoft, Research in Motion and many more based on the Linux platform, it became important for them to look for allies in the competition. They already have spun off its unit that makes the software for devices as PalmSource in 2003 and now are looking towards Microsoft to provide the software for their devices.
