iTunes and Napster are best known music services
Apple iTunes and Napster are the two most popular online music downloading services in the United States. A report released by the Ipsos Insight has shown that Napster has surprisingly more brand awareness amongst the consumers when compared to Apple iTunes. However, Apple beats Napster in every other parameter. Apple iTunes also of course has the largest market share in the legal music download service.
The Ipsos Insight study showed that iTunes came in second place after Napster in terms of brand awareness with 57 per cent of the votes compared to 79 per cent. The report also described the music selling and download market as “a two-horse race between Apple’s iTunes and Napster 2.0.”
Apple also dominated on the usability front as the consumers found iTunes to be more user friendly compared to other services available on the web. Apple won 33 percent of the votes here compared to 22 percent votes for Napster. Incidentally, Napster had a lead in this segment in the last study and has lost considerable share compared to Apple.
The study also revealed that most consumers were interested in better quality music files from these services. Other popular demands were better searching abilities and more variety in selectable tracks. Microsoft is missing from most of the segments as they plan to renovate their efforts in collaboration with MTV with a new service URGE next year.
Other brands which found worthwhile mention in the study were Yahoo! Music, RealPlayer Music Store, Rhapsody and MTV.com. The study took into consideration opinions from 1,088 online music purchasing web user audiences.
