Xanga is one of the oldest blogging platforms on the web. It was launched in 1999 and since then it has seen its ups and down. The operators of the service are however now in a dilemma. They need funds to keep the site operating and they are asking their community for help.
They are seeking to raise USD 60,000 through a Kickstarter style program. Users who pay would get benefits depending upon the amount. Xanga said that if they are able to raise enough money, they would port the site to WordPress so that it is easier to manage in the future. The service would become a paid only blogging platform even if they are able to keep it online.
If they are not able to raise enough money, the project would shut down on July 15.
The good thing is that they are working on allowing all their users to download their data backups.
