Samsung to back Blu-Ray format 100%
South Korea based tech giant Samsung has said that they are fully supportive of the Sony’s Blu-Ray format and have no plans to launch HD DVD players in the future.
David Steel, vice president of Samsung Electronics said in a statement: “Samsung is going all-out for Blu-ray. We were the first one to market the Blu-ray player.”
The company added that they also have no plans to develop the so-called combo devices, which support both the Blu-ray and HD-DVD platforms.
This is the first time Samsung has clearly stated its preference for the Blu-Ray format over the Toshiba’s HD DVD format. Their local rivals in Korea LG Electronics also have abandoned plans to develop HD DVD players.
Blue-Ray drives use a blue-violet laser beam to read and write to the disc. It has storage capacities starting from 25GBs for a single layer disc.
