British surfer Tom Lowe will attempt to fulfil his dream of riding the mighty Todos Santos wave in Mexico
Vodafone is partnering with Lowe, connecting him with on-the-ground experts and using mobile technology to pin-point exactly when the wave will arrive
Lowe’s challenge is part of Vodafone Firsts, a global programme to inspire people to do something remarkable for the first time with the help of mobile technology
Ever since he started surfing, it has been Tom Lowe’s ambition to ride the Todos Santos wave off of the northern tip of Baja California, Mexico. Predicting when the wave will arrive is notoriously difficult and that is where mobile technology will play a crucial role in helping Lowe achieve his dream.
Within days, the 30-year-old leading big wave British surfer will use a global ocean forecasting system on his tablet to help him locate the wave, around 12 miles off of the coast in Ensenada, before jumping on to his surfboard and attempting to ride it. Lowe, who believes he will be the first European to ride the wave, will travel by plane, car, boat, foot and surfboard to reach his destination.
Lowe’s story is one of three Vodafone Firsts stories unveiled today, with more coming to www.firsts.com throughout 2014. The Vodafone Firsts programme is about inspiring people to do something remarkable for the first time with the help of mobile technology.*
Speaking about taking on the challenge, Tom Lowe, said: “I’ve dreamt of surfing this wave since I was a boy. So when Vodafone asked what I would do if I could do something remarkable for the first time using mobile technology, I knew immediately. I’ve spent a long time in the ocean preparing for this moment and Vodafone’s support in connecting me with the right people and technology means I can track when the wave will peak so I don’t miss this chance.”
Vodafone Group Brand Director Barbara Haase said: “Tom’s challenge is incredibly courageous and mobile technology will play a crucial role in helping make it happen. Vodafone Firsts is about personal innovation and inspiring people to think in a new way. Mobile technology has changed so much about our lives in a relatively short time frame, from being able to plan a journey in seconds to helping people achieve their ambitions.”
